George was the husband of Julian C. Miller; the son of George B. and Nancy Markel, and the father of Jacob H. Markel.

George W. Markel was born March 15, 1868, and died in the York Hospital, following two operations, Saturday morning, August 7, 1937, aged 69 years, 4 months, and 22 days.
At the time of his death he was treasurer of the congregation of Zion (Shaffer's) Evangelical and Reformed Church and one of the trustees of the cemetery.
The entire community was shocked to learn of his sudden death. As neighbor, friend, and relative he was esteemed by all. He was referred to as "Uncle George" by many who lived in the community in which he spent so many years of his life as a successful farmer. In the home and in the church he was his pastor's friend and supporter.
He leaves to mourn his death his widow, one son, Jacob H. Markel, two sisters, five grandchildren, and a host of friends.
The funeral services were held on Tuesday morning, August 10, 1937, with services at the house and at Shaffer's Church. The church was filled with relatives and friends. His pastor, Rev. Paul D. Yoder, D.D., preached on the text, I Thess. 4:13, 14. Burial was made in the new cemetery.
