Mr. Alfred P. Josephsen, Sr., 86, peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2013, in Livingston. A Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Aloysius Church, Caldwell, on Thursday, May 2 at 10 am. Visiting in the Prout Funeral Home, (www.proutfuneralhome.com), 370 Bloomfield Avenue, Verona on Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm.

Born in Union City, NJ, Mr. Josephsen grew up in Hoboken, moving to Caldwell and then West Caldwell after WW II. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Lake Champlain and the USS Rescue as a medical corpsman in the Pacific Campaign during World War II.
Prior to serving in the war, he attended St. Peter's College, and upon his return, he
earned his Bachelor's Degree, cum laude, in Business Administration from Seton Hall University in 1949. Mr. Josephsen was associated with the Travelers Insurance Company since 1955 and was the principal of the David M. Hundertmark Insurance Agency in Pompton Lakes from 1966 until his retirement in 2006.

Mr. Josephsen served as past President of the Rotary Club of Pompton Lakes, past President of the West Essex Jaycees and past President of the Pompton Lakes Chamber of Commerce. He was a founding member of the Caldwell-West Caldwell Recreation Committee, a founding member of the Caldwell West Caldwell Community Pools, and was instrumental in the arrival of Santa Claus in the West Essex area for decades. He was the founder of, and longtime volunteer coach of the Junior Boys Basketball League. Since 1962, the "A.P.J. Award", named in his honor, continues to be given to the young athlete who best demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership and determination within the league.
Active at St. Aloysius Parish, Mr. Josephsen served as a Lector, Usher, and was instrumental in the development of both the CCD and CYO youth programs. He served on the Board of Mt. St. Dominic Academy in Caldwell and was also a member of the Essex Fells Country Club.
