John R. Bates, 88, of Smith Lake, Manistique, Michigan died January 4, 2012 at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique.

He was born July 5, 1923 in Coldwater, Michigan the son of Carl and Luella (Ransom) Bates and graduated from high school there. Following graduation, he became a police officer with the Coldwater, Michigan police department.

John then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the European theater during World War II.

Following military service, John started his career with the Michigan National Guard. He lived in the Haslett, Michigan area and worked as an engineer/inspector for the Guard until his retirement.

In 1966 he married the former Audrey L. Martin in Lansing, Michigan. They moved to the Manistique area in 1984. Audrey preceded him in death on July 8, 2006.

John was a life-member of the Schoolcraft V.F.W. Post #4420 in Manistique and a former member of the Manistique Moose Lodge. He served as a driver for the Manistique Senior Center and over the years, enjoyed playing cards, bowling, shooting pool and golfing.

John is survived by his son, Carl Bates of Manistique; step-sons, Glenn (Mary) Geirland of St. Johns, MI and Guy Vertz of Quincy, MI; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; along with a brother, Harley; and his sisters, Mary Jane and Ila.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverley Bates; and a step-daughter, Tina Dunn.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 3:00 pm, Saturday, January 7, 2012 at the Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A veteran memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 pm, at the funeral home with Pastor Steven Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
