Kathern Ann Horton passed away June 3, 2022, at the age of 98.
Kathern was born September 20, 1923 to Willa and Victor Malone and grew up in Mertens and Frost with her siblings Laverne, Maureen, Victor Mills, Billy Earl, Jackie Lynn, Jerry Sue and Judy Sherron, as well as her half siblings Floren and Joy. She had strong memories of the day she survived the May 1930 Frost tornado. She was leaving school and was pulled into the Britton's store in downtown Frost with her two older sisters Laverne and Maureen. Attending school in Frost and Mertens, Kathern was a great basketball player and graduated from Mertens High School with the class of 1942.
Kathern met her husband Nick Horton near Mertens, and they were married on November 17, 1945 in Blooming Grove. Their daughter Nickie Ann, born February 21, 1948, was the apple of her eye. She was a wonderful mother and a devoted wife, struggling only when her husband Nick shot off the majority of his foot. She always wanted the best for her family and friends, and enjoyed many wonderful times with her granddaughter Anna, on sister gatherings, and visiting with her great grandchildren, including trips to Barbados, Hawaii, England, and a Caribbean cruise.
She turned down a trip to Ireland.
A hardworking woman, Kathern was a seamstress at the sewing factory in Italy, Texas for many years. She was a quiet woman of few words, honest to a fault, and attended church at Mertens Southern Baptist and Northside Baptist. Her family described her as easy-going and humble, a blessing to the family. They will fondly remember her saying, "Goodnight, don't let the bed bugs bite," especially to Jackson, and "I thought you died." She loved Nickie's steaks off the grill.
Kathern leaves behind her daughter Nickie Ann Lagomarsino; her beloved granddaughter Anna Katherine Volley and her husband Dale Volley; her great-grandchildren Jackson Farr, Fiona Farr, and Ren Volley; her surviving sisters Jackie Lynn Anderson (and Billy Ray) and Jerry Sue Malone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects and share memories anytime on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 from 11:00 AM until 5:00 p.m.at Corley Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Richland Cemetery in Mertens, Texas, with Dr. Darren W. Heil of Central Baptist Church in Blooming Grove officiating at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.
