William married Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Strawn on Jan 1, 1835 at Warren County, Indiana. He was a Minister of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Between 1837 and 1847, 5 of their eldest children were born in Indiana, Iowa, and Illinois. In 1846 they departed for Oregon Territory by wagon train. They wintered at Oskaloosa, Iowa, then continued west in a wagon train which Rev. Jolly captained. For part of the journey, they were in a wagon train captained by John William Bewley. The Jolly family arrived in Oregon Territory in September 1847. Between 1848 and 1861, 6 additional children were born to the couple. They settled a donation land claim of 640 acres north of present day Hillsboro, Oregon.
