Ernest Leighton Allen was the sixth of nine children born to Thomas Jefferson Allen and Mariam Jordan Leighton. His parents were the children of Iowa pioneer settlers, and the couple were instrumental in helping to form the structure of the town of Wellman, Washington County, Iowa where they lived.

He was living with his family in Iowa till 1905, sometime after that he moved to California as he married Myrtle Melissa Spencer in Los Angeles on 31 Oct 1910. They had two children: Rex Ward; and Max Dean. Ernest worked as a carpenter mostly.
