William was saved at an early age and was a member of Central Baptist Church. Most of his life he was known as Billy or Bill. He lived and was educated in Hamblen County, except for two years in the U.S. Army, 14 months and 7 days of which were served in Korea during the war.
In 1955, William went to work at Western Auto Downtown. There he met the love of his life, Serena Hollingsworth Birchfield, who was raising three children: Gary D. Birchfield, Robert D. Birchfield, and Linda H. Birchfield. William and Serena were married on April 28, 1962.
William worked at Forenta, making laundry and dry-cleaning equipment, until January 21 1969, when he went to work at Morristown Fire Department, where he rose through the ranks as fireman, driver engineer, lieutenant, and captain. His tour came to an end on November 17, 1993, when while on duty he had an aneurysm of the aorta. William was flown to Saint Mary's Hospital in Knoxville. Upon arrival he had approximately 13 minutes to live. After 24 pints of blood and 13 days in the hospital, he came home. On May 19, 2010, William found out why his life was spared to care for Serena, who was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration and could no longer get around by herself. Later she developed Alzheimer's. After a short time, she had trouble walking without falling. On June 16, 2019, Serena passed away.
Preceding William in death was the love of his life, Serena Brady; two sons, Michael and Steve; sister Dorothy Ford; mother, father, and grandparents on both sides; and all of his uncles and aunts, along with some cousins.
Survived by children Gary and wife Janet Birchfield, Robert and wife Cathy Birchfield, Linda and husband Max Shell; brothers J.C. and wife Lorene Brady and Robert and wife Phyllis Brady; sister Barbara Golden; grandchildren Mary Serena Davis, Kevin Shell, Amanda Jennings, Lindsay Birchfield, Jessica Birchfield; five great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren; several in-laws and a special friend, Steve Conway, who checked on him every day after Serena passed away; several nieces and nephews, good neighbors, and friends in the fire and police departments.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2023 from 9AM until 10AM at Alder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10AM. A procession to Hamblen Memory Gardens and a brief graveside service will follow the funeral.
