Died on April 9, 1927 and buried in Erin Cemetary. Parents: Neil French (born County, Atrim, Ireland) and Eliza Vance (born County Antrim, Ireland) . Cause of death; Chronic Endocarditis. #7083-1927. James came to America at the age of 6 years old, probably in 1847. His father Neil was not on this 1850 census although he is thought to have come to America when James did. Neil is located as a member of Spring Hill (Erin) Cumberland Presbyterian Church., Newton County, Miss. on October 29, 1955. According to an WPTA report prepared in 1936, "James and Ben French sailed from Belfast, Ireland in 1844. After eight weeks and three days on the sea, the little vessel landed at New Orleans. James French's mother had died on the way over, but James, now an orphan, came on to Newton County.

Obituary of James French pulished in Union Appeal, April, 1927: James French, aged 86 years and five months, died at his home Saturday April 9, and was buried Sunday afternoon at Erin Church. Rev. W. On 1850 Federal Census of Newton County, Ms. James French was located as follows:

Household: George Armstrong, age 39 Male born New York, Phebe, age 37, female, born New York:
Mary ? age 63, female born New York, James French, age 9, male, born Ireland. ( Why James was
living in this household, I do not know, unless they were neighbors, etc. being born in New York, I know
of no connection to this family for James.)

James is located in the household of his father Neil Richard French and his second wife, Isaballa Dooley in 1860 Federal Census, age 19.
.
James is located on page 490 of the 1870 Federal Census of Newton County, Ms. as follows:
James French, 29 Ireland
Matilda, 25 Ireland
Mary A., 1 Mississippi
Eliza J. (sister) 17, Mississippi

James is shown in the 1880 Federal Census of Newton County, Ms. Beat 3, pg.601B as follows:
James French, 39 Ireland
Matilda 34
Mary A., 11
Charles E. 5
Viola G.2
James Louis 1

1900 Federal Census for Newton County, Beat 3 reads:
James French, head household, born Ireland, both parents born Ireland
(says Lucy A. don't know where they got that) Matilda, wife, born Ireland, both parents born Ireland
V.G. daughter,
Jas. L., son

1920 Federal Census for Newton County, Beat 3 reads:
James French,age 79
Gertrude V., daughter, age 42

According to these census records, James lived in the same area that David Edward "Eddie" Vance and Kelly Milling and wife Elizabeth lived, just a house or two away. Property Record book at Historical Society says James French owned land SW 1/4, Section 24, Township 8, Range 10, 160 acres, Newton County, Ms. This is area close to David Edward "Eddie:" Vance.

Story told my Mary Nell French Leach: Grace Vance French, Mary's mother said James and Matilda had a store, called it a commissary, that they sold everything from food to plows, etc. In Aunt Gertie's diary (James and Matilda's daughter) she says"Pa and Ma" are in the store, which would verify that they did have a store.

I believe, as under notes for Neil French, James father, that James Mother died on boat coming
from Ireland and is buried at sea. Her name was Eliza Jane Vance. I believe her to be the mother of
Thomas, James, George, and sister Margaret and that their father Neil, married Isabella Unknown in America later and had 5 more children, David, Eliza Jane, Susan Isabella, William John and Neil
Richard, Jr.
