Josias was the son of Alexander Brown by his first wife, whose maiden name was McCoy.

His obituary in the "Boone Co. Republican" newspaper, issue of 12 March 1890, reads that "Father Brown was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 36, and has since lived a life consecrated to the Master's service, and died happy in the Christian faith, fully ready for the summons, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of the Lord." Another newspaper notice states that Josias was a "faithful, consistent Christian for many years".
