Matilda was the oldest daughter of James Phillip BURCH (b.1799) and Mary SPARGER. She was born in North Carolina and traveled to Indiana with her parents sometime in the early 1820s.
Matilda married 4 Nov 1841 in Greene Co, Indiana, when she was 19. Her husband, Joel BURCH, was a second cousin, ten years her senior. Together the couple had three children:
William Burch 1842 – 1901
Hiram Burch 1843 – 1930
Mary Ann Burch 1850 – 1897
Joel died in Monroe Co. Oct 4 1883 at the age of seventy-one.
Matilda Burch died at her Stanford home the morning of Apr 14, 1896 from an attack of the measles. The Bloomington World reported her age as 85 years, but she was actually 74.
"She was a member of the Baptist Church and one of the best known ladies in the western part of the county."
