7172 Private A Hickson, 2nd Battalion the Grenadier Guards. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Dunera on 18 Mar 1900, and arrived at the Cape about 11 Apr 1900. Along with the 2nd Scots Guards, 2nd East Yorkshire Regiment, and 1st Leinster Regiment, they formed the 16th Brigade under Major General Barrington Campbell. They joined the main Army after the capture of Bloemfontein and were sent to the Springfontein-Edenburg district, and immediately took the field at Orlogspoort and Dewetsdorp. During the advance to Pretoria they fought at Biddulphsberg on 29 May 1900 (35 killed and over 100 wounded). After the fall of Pretoria they were deployed in the Orange Free State. Private Hickson died of disease at 19 Stationary Hospital, Harrismith on 24 Aug 1900.
He is also commemorated on a Boer War memorial board in Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Place, Windsor, Berkshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/200105/ and http://www.berkswm.org/BWM3023.html).
