Obituary

Florence Ruby passed away peacefully after a period of deteriorating health, in Jubilee Lodge, Eston on December 24, 2001. Florence Isabelle Ruby (Anderson) was born on December 31, 1915 on the homestead on 30-24-22 W3rd, some 30 miles south of Kindersley in what came to be known as the Goldeye district. She attended the Goldeye School, until high school, which she took at Glidden, riding her brother-in-law's horse five and a half miles to school. After that, Florence worked in Edmonton for General Hospital, answering phones for a gas company, as well as babysitting, cooking and cleaning. Then the next step was Toronto during World War II, making and assembling firearms. She then worked as an operator for the Toronto Transit Company. After World War II, Florence married Marvin Ruby and came back to Eston. They had one son William (Bill), their pride and joy. Florence worked for the rural telephones, mostly as a night operator. When Eston went to dial phones, she worked for SaskTel. When the office in Eston closed, Marvin and Florence moved to Kindersley, with Marvin going back to Eston to farm in the summer. She worked in North Battleford, after that retiring after almost thirty years of telephone service. Florence was a world traveler, travelling to Australia to see Bill when he worked there. Later she returned to Australia as well as visiting the British Isles, the Middle East and Hawaii. She also travelled extensively in Canada and the United States, including Alaska. Florence was predeceased by, in chronological order, her parents Elizabeth and Frank Anderson, her niece Louise Hughes, her sister Muriel Hicks (Abbey), her son Bill, her husband Marvin and sister Olive Burke. She leaves to mourn her sister, Aileen Landry, her brother-in-law, Leonard Burke, as well as several nieces and nephews, and her dear friends, particularly, Vi Proudlove and Louise Easton. Funeral services were held in the Eston Full Gospel Church, with Pastor Gordon Campbell officiating. Some of Florence's favorite scriptures were read by Andy McKenzie. The organist was Maxine Shearing. Gordon and Mildred Campbell sang "What a Day That Will Be." Linda Imler, Florence's niece, gave the eulogy. The honorary pallbearers were all those who shared in Florence's life. Active pallbearers were Rick Shea, Darren Imler, Don Whyley, John Behrer, Frank Abbey and Harry Imler. Ushers were Glen Fairs and Roy Kraft. Arrangements were entrusted to the Eston-Snipe Lake Funeral Chapel. The internment took place in the Eston Cemetery. If desired, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
