Former Glidden farmer dies at Calgary
Francis (Frank) Herbert Anderson passed away in Calgary City Hospital on February 26, 1962, after ten years of failing health.
Mr. Anderson was born in Ireland on February 11, 1881. He lived a life of a sailor until his marriage to Elizabeth M. McEvoy.
In 1910 he came to Canada and worked on a farm in the Indian Head district. He was joined there by his wife and infant daughter Muriel in 1911. From there he and his family moved to Kindersley where he was employed for a while. About 1914 he took up homesteading in the Glidden district some thirty miles south of Kindersley. In 1947 he retired from farming and moved their home into Glidden.
For a time, he was a janitor of the Glidden school. After giving up his job he took up his favorite hobby of building ship models which he had learned while at sea. He took great pride and joy in this work and built many wonderful models.
When ill health caused him to leave his home in Glidden, he lived most of time with his daughter Florence (Mrs. M. Ruby) in Eston. Last summer he went to make his home with his daughter Aileen (Mrs. Landry) of Bowness, Alta., where he lived until the time of his passing. He was a kind and loving father. Always pleasant and cheerful, never complaining even after having both legs amputated.
He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth on January 14, 1951, also by one sister Poly Anderson in Ireland and on brother, Rev. Robert Anderson in England. He leaves to mourn his passing, four daughters Mrs. L.K. Abbey (Muriel) of Glidden, Mrs. Marvin Ruby (Florence) of Eston, Mrs. Leonard Burke (Olive) and Mrs. Landry (Aileen) both of Bowness, Alta., nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Blezzard from the Eston United Church. "The Old Rugged Cross" a favorite hymn of the deceased was sung by Mr. Edward Jackson. Interment was in the Eston cemetery with the Eston Funeral Home in charge.
Pallbearers were Wm. Bender, Tony Dirk, Edward Owens, Hayden Owens, Gordon Weeks and Dean Robinson.
Expressions of sympathy were shown by the many beautiful floral tributes.

As it Happened - History of the R.M. of Newcombe

Frank, after completing school to the equivalent of grade twelve, joined the Navy for 17 years. He left the Navy to marry an immigrate to Canada, sailing from Liverpool March 17, 1910. His wife and infant daughter Muriel (Abbey) followed July 11, 1911.
Frank landed on a farm at Milestone, Saskatchewan. He had a patient farmer employer, and through trial and error he learned. He recalls some funny incidents such as putting collars on horses upside down. He and his family, a wife and two girls Olive (Burke) born at Milestone landed in Kindersley, Saskatchewan around 1913. He worked hauling water with tank and horses for the town. In the spring he struck out on foot some thirty miles south to file on a homestead 30-24-22 W3rd M. Here his last two daughters were born, Florence (Ruby) and Aileen (Landry). They spent many long fruitless years on that hilly, stony land.
They left that homestead in 1929, moved on to Tommy Grandages land (he was a postmaster in Glidden). This land was not much better, but they did eke a living, the family was warmly clothed, well fed, and felt loved. Around 947-48 the family moved into Glidden where Frank was custodian of Glidden Consolidated School. This was quite a hard task as the big brick school was heated with steam, from a coal fired furnace. Water was supplied in summer but in winter Frank carried snow. Elizabeth passed away January 14, 1951 in Eston hospital. Frank continued on at the school for a few more years. On retiring he enjoyed coming to Eston and visiting his daughters in Calgary, Alberta. Frank passed away February, 1962 in Calgary at age 81. They are buried in the Eston cemetery.
