MR. EDWARD HASSETT KILLED.

The road from the Tarcutta Racecourse into the township was the scene of a shocking accident on Easter Monday night when the visitors to the races were returning home. Mr. Edward Hassett and Mr. J. Geaghan 'double-banked ' a horse; and started away at a sharp canter, increasing the animal's pace as it careered along. When about 300 yards from the racecourse, in the dark, the horse ran into a sulky being driven by Mr. Ingram in the same direction.

The horse struck the wheel, turning the sulky round. The forceful impact shot the two riders in the air and threw the horse. Geaghan was thrown clear, but Hassett, who came to the ground fairly on the crown of his head, fell under the horse which had to be lifted off him by men on the scene when the accident occurred. Hassett was found to be lifeless, death taking place instantaneous with the fall. Blood oozed freely from his nose and ears.

Attention was directed to Geaghan, who was picked up unconscious and badly cut about. He was taken to Mr. Ingram's house. Mr. Hassett's body was removed to the Tarcutta Hotel in charge of the police. It was found that his neck was broken, and the base of the skull fractured. The police wired to Wagga to the Coroner, but that official was away, the result being that a delay of two days occurred before the inquest was held. A verdict of accidental death was recorded.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Adelong Cemetery. The cortège was a lengthy one, showing the large number of friends who paid the last sad tribute to the memory of the deceased who was much respected. The Rev. Father Sharkey performed the burial rites, while Mr. Chas. Passlow was the undertaker.

A wife and one child — a girl 6 years old — are left to mourn their great loss. Deceased was a native of the district and was 36 years of age. The deepest sympathy is expressed for the sorrowing wife and child and the relatives of the deceased.
