William Torrance went North to Illinois to stay with his sister Ruth Elmira after his parents died (his father in 1842 and his mother in 1845). He was there at the outbreak of the War between the States. He enlisted in the 14th Illinois Regiment, Co H of the Union Army with the rank of Private. He died of disease (consumption) in General Hospital Keokuk, Iowa on 30 Jul 1862, He was not married and had no family.
