Ruth Robertson Whimpey

ORANGEVILLE-Florance Ruth Barney Robertson Whimpey, aka Fruit, daughter of Henry Orval Barney and Isabell Ann Tucker, born July 17, 1930 in the family home in Clawson, Utah, passed away in the comfort and care of her family March 24, 2022 in American Fork, Utah. She was 91.

As a young girl, Ruth attended elementary school in Ferron, Utah through age 12, later relocating to Salt Lake City where she attended Murray High School. During World War II her mother joined the Army and Ruth became a live-in nanny caring for small children. On one of her visits to her grandparents in Orangeville following the war's end, she met her future husband, Ted Robertson, just returned from military service in Europe. They married December 13, 1946 and their union brought six children. Upon Ted's tragic accidental death in 1956, Ruth was required to work to support her children which she did for the next eight years. In 1964, she met and married Louis Whimpey, a widower with five children. Together, they formed a happy home in Orangeville and celebrated 54 years of marriage before Lou passed away in 2019.

Ruth was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many leadership positions including service with Lou in the Manti Temple for many years. She was also active in civic and community affairs including Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, PTA, and the Orangeville Beautification Committee for which she received a key to the city for her untiring efforts. She was very patriotic and loved the flag. Ruth was tremendously creative; she was an accomplished painter, writer of poetry and stories, seamstress, and made many beautiful quilts. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Her legacy includes 11 children, 59 grandchildren, 183 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great grandchildren. Ruth is preceded in death by both husbands, a grandson, a great-grandson and three great-granddaughters.

She is survived by her children, Earlene and Robert Allen, LouRee and Bruce McGill, Dennis Robertson, Robyn and Greg Rampton, Diane Ware, Karen and Stephen Gordon, Paula and Don Gordon, Gayle Robertson, David and Leta Robertson, Dean and Nancy Whimpey and Marsha and Bill World.

The family wishes to thank the loving care provided by Symbii Hospice, especially Brooke, Candace and Corey.
