John was the youngest of three sons born to Helen Finerty and John Joseph Thompson, Sr. He married Mary Elizabeth Jackson in 1878, and they had twelve children: Bertha Violet, Grace Pearl, Effie M., Franklin Lee, Goldie M., Lawrence Monroe, Edna G., John Rupert, Hazel L., Laura, Dorothy Audrey, and Ethel Madeline (my grandmother).
He was employed by the Lehigh Valley Railroad as a locomotive engineer, and later by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes-Barre as a stationary engineer.
