James was the oldest of three sons born to Helen Finnerty and John Joseph Thompson, Sr. He married Mary Minerva Kester in 1880, and they had ten children: Clyde, Minerva, Valley, Irene, Madge, May, Forrest, Byron, Ruth, and Roy.
He was a pump runner for the Shickshinny Coal Works, working at the West End Colliery. While on his way home from work one afternoon, he attempted to jump on a moving trip of mine cars and fell. He died when he was accidentally run over by the mine cars.
