From Geneanet Community Trees Index: Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Callahan was the son of William C. Callahan and his first wife Caroline Matilda Miller. His father born 1813 in Jefferson City, Jefferson County, Tennessee and died 20 April 1898 in Buchanan, Missouri. (Frank's grandparents were William Callaghan and his wife Rachel Vanhooser). The list of family members includes his stepmother Polly Ann Smith, whom his father married 26 Feb 1860 in Buchannan County, MO; Frank's siblings: Editha Angeline Callahan, Christopher Miller Callahan, James Callahan, John A. Callahan, Laura S. Callahan, Margaret Callahan, Mary E. Callahan, Sarah Adeline Callahan, and Thomas Callahan. The family was among the early pioneers of Buchanan County, Missouri, near the post offices of Rushville and Winthrop.

From the Marriage Records of Missouri: On 4 Nov 1872, Buchanan County, Missouri, Frank Callahan married Rhoda Stormer (Starmer).
In the 1880 US Census, they resided at Eveline, Buchanan County, Missouri with daughter Bettie Ann, 2 years old and son John F., 1 month old. A notation on the census was that John was sick with the mumps, then often a fatal disease.
Numerous newspapers reported of the tragedy that fell upon this growing family on the 15 September 1889. The couple had moved off their large farm near Bean Lake and moved into the city of Saint Joseph with four children, because of sickness in the family. Frank went back to the farm to sell some grain, then came back to the city, but the family didn't know that he was back. He was in (John) Self's Saloon on South Sixth Street, when he was struck in the head with a chair by Adelbert B. Luke, a cook at the saloon. The blow was hard enough that Frank Callahan died a short time later, around 1:30 a.m. Witnesses testified that Frank was not initiating a fight, but rather only tried to protect himself. At the trial in Andrew County (Savanah, MO), Mr. Luke received a 10-year, second degree prison sentence for murder.

Frank Callihan's Death Certificate: male, white, married, 32 years, born about 1857, Death date 14 Sept 1889, Death place St. Joseph, MO. Cause of Death: Concussion of Brain from Blow.
Missouri Deaths & Burial Index: Burial Place: DeKalb.

So here's what was found about the surviving family:
In the 1900 US Census, Rhoda Jane Starmer Callahan reported that she was 45, born Jan 1855 MO, now a resident of St. Joseph Ward 5, Buchanan, Missouri, 11 St, a widow with 5 living children having had 9 children. Her occupation was a "Janitress Brick RR". Living with her were daughters: Belle, 18 working as a seamster; Hallie A., 16, working as a dentist's clerk; and sons: Charles, Frank J., and James E., along with 4 boarders. However, relatives claim that Frank J. and James were not her sons, and they don't know where the boys belong.
In the 1910 US Census, Rhoda J. Callahan, 55, widowed, worked as a "Janitress at a bank", reported having had 9 children, 4 of whom were still living. In her household were her son Charles, 20 who worked as a porter in a hotel; her daughter-in-law Marie, 24; granddaughter Hallie B. who was less than a year old, and one boarder.
Rhoda's obituary, published in the St. Joseph Gazette (St. Joseph, Missouri) 21 Jan 1935, Mon Page7 reads as follows:
"CALLAHAN--Rhoda J., aged 82, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7:15 p.m. at Evergreen Colo. She is the widow of Benjamin F. Callahan, formerly of Buchanan County..."

"Rhoda and Frank's children were:
1) Elizabeth Ann, who went by Bessie. She was born August 20, 1877, married Albert Brown in 1897 (these were my grandmother's grandparents), and died in 1969.
2) John F. He died soon after birth, likely of the mumps mentioned on the 1880 census.
3) Rhoda Belle, who went by Belle. She was born in August 1881, married Carl Freeman in 1902, and died in 1940.
4) Hallie A Callahan. She was born October 5, 1883, married Harry Briggs about 1905, and died in 1915.
5 & 6) Josie and Jackie, two daughters who died as infants or toddlers. Josie lived to be about 3, while Jackie's age at death is unknown. Given the spread of the other children's birth dates, I believe they were likely born about 1885 and 1887. One of these girls was still alive at the time of Frank's death, as a newspaper article from that time mentioned that he had four children, all daughters.
7) Charles Franklin, who went by Frank. He was born December 4, 1889 (two months after his father's death), married (1st) Marie Dirks about 1909 and (2nd) Augusta (Swan) Johnson in 1921, and died in 1949.
8 & 9) There were two other children whose names and birth and death dates are unknown. I suspect they were born in the 5-year gap between Rhoda and Frank's marriage and Bessie's birth in 1877. This hunch rests on the fact that information regarding John, Josie, and Jackie survived within the family, while the other babies were only documented on Rhoda's census records. Rhoda's surviving children likely talked about the brothers and sisters who lived and died during their own lifetimes but may not have known about the ones who came before their oldest (living) sister. (My information about John, Josie, and Jackie originally came from Hallie Callahan Spinden, daughter of Charles "Frank" Callahan.)

Frank J. and James E., who appeared on the 1900 census, were not Rhoda's children. I'm not sure where they came from or even if their surname was actually Callahan, but the "son" relationship was a recording error. My evidence for this is:
1) There is no record within the family of Frank and James, who would have survived far longer than John, Josie, or Jackie, mentioned above, even if they had died immediately following the 1900 census...." see more on Rhoda Callahan's memorial page. Contributor: Amanda Fisher (49788827)
