Born in Pope County, Illinois, to Joseph Alexander "Alec" Atchley and Malinda (Smith) Atchley. He moved to Red River County, TX, with his parents in about 1874. His father's sister, Priscilla (Atchley) Butler was the maternal grandmother of his wife, Sallie (Parks) Atchley, whom he married on 26 Jul 1898 in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas.
From this marital union were born five known children (in the following birth order): Elijah "Lige" Emerson Atchley, Joseph Alexander "Elec" Atchley, Mabel M (Atchley) Powers, Jack Wally Atchley," and Willie "Bill" Hoss Atchley.
"Dan" moved his family to Kiowa County, OK, shortly after the territory was opened to white settlement in 1901.
He rests next to his wife, Sallie, in Roosevelt Cemetery under a headstone inscribed "Dan Atchley."
