"Elec" was born in Sewee, Meigs County, TN, where he married his first wife, Jane Buster, on 16 Sep 1860. He moved with the Busters to Pope County, Illinois shortly after their marriage. Jane died there in 1861.
He reconnected with kin who had moved to Pope County prior to his relocation. He married a cousin, Malinda Smith, on 23 Feb 1862, according to their grandson, Robert Marion Atchley, son of their youngest, Francis Marion Robert "Bob"Atchley.

In about 1874, "Elec" moved his family from Illinois to Red River County, TX, to join several of his brothers who lived there. He later moved to Dallas County, TX, but when lands upon the Kiowa/Comanche/Apache Reservation opened to white settlement in 1901, the extended family moved to the future Kiowa County and homesteaded along Otter Creek.
He rests next to his second wife here in Roosevelt Cemetery and is surrounded by extended family also sharing this final place of rest.
