George Augustine Washington Spotswood served as a Lt. in the War of 1812. He married in 1805, his cousin, Lucy Rowzie Spotswood (1783-1866). They settled in Springfield, Ill. around 1836 when he opened the Rural Hotel. He was postmaster in Springfield from 1841-44. Eight children were Dr. William Augustine Washington (1806-91) who married in 1842, Mary Reese Eastin (c1821-84); George Robinson (c1810-ante1870) who married (1) Elizabeth Taliaferro (c1810-c50), and (2) in 1853, Mary Ann Green (c1836-1900); Com. Charles Fenton Mercer (CSA)(1813-92) who married c1843, Joanna Arquimbau (1827-1908); Eliza Ann (c1815-)(unm); James Heath (c1815-47/8)(dsp) who died at Vera Cruz in the Mexican War; Henry Mercer (c1817-54)(dsp) who served in the Mexican War and died in Los Angeles, Ca.; Anastasia Virginia Lafayette (c1823-47)(dsp) who married in 1846, Isaac Bush Curran, Sr.; and Dr. Norborne Dandridge Spotswood (1825-91) who married in 1860, Louise Caroline Owen (1837-).
