Mr. William Buck Church Sr., 83, of Charlotte Highway, Mooresville, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at his residence.
Born on May 20, 1918, in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Roy Grover and Eulalia Benfield Church. Mr. Church was a
veteran of the U.S. Army, serving four years and four months. Three of these years were spent in Italy and Germany. He retired
at the end of 1980 as a foreman of the paint department at Cannon Mills in Kannapolis after 37 years of service.
He was a member and deacon of Centre Presbyterian Church in Mt. Mourne. He was a member of Iredell County Volunteer
Sheriff's Department for 30 years. He was also a retired member of Shepherd Volunteer Fire Department, where he was
Fireman of the Year in 1973. He was a member of the Traffic Control Division as well as a former chaplain and board member.
He was a board member of Tom Swann VFW Post 1072. He was also a member of Stroke Club.
Mr. Church was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Church; and sisters, Helen Beaver and Ruby Cheek.
He is survived by his wife, Joncie Nantz Church, whom he married on Dec. 23, 1945; a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Jane) Hendrix of
Mocksville; sons, William B. "Sandy" Church Jr. and wife, Carey, of Mooresville, and Jack Church and wife, Donna, also of
Mooresville; a brother, Roy Church Jr. of Raleigh; sisters, Joan Sherrill of Mooresville, Ann Smith of Johnson City, Tenn.,
Mary Adams of Kannapolis, and Margaret Helms of Kannapolis; grandchildren, Gina Gremminger, J.C. Hendrix, Chris
Church, Kathy Church, Brad Church and Joey Church; and great-grandchildren, Morgan Hendrix, Cody Hendrix, Mason
Gremminger and Adam Gremminger.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday at Centre Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert M. Howard officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville.
