In the period of 1724 - 27, James Walkup of Scotland, with his parents, immigrated to America. It is not clear as to what happened to his parents. He is the founder of our line of Walkup's. He pioneered in North and South Carolina. In 1758, he married Margaret Pickens. To them seven children were born: Samuel, James, Jr., Robert, Israel, Joseph, John, Margaret, James, who became a captain, and three sons, Joseph, Samuels and James Jr., served in the Revolutionary War. After the was, the children located in various states.
One of James' sons, Samuel (1758-1851), who was the great great great grandfather, joined with Daniel Boone in the settlement of Kentucky in 1790. He was blessed with eight children: James, John, Robert, William, Thomas, Samuel Jr., Margaret and Elizabeth. With his family, he accompanied Daniel Boone on may famous hunting expeditions. He was in the famous rescue party to retake from the Indians, two young daughters of a neighbor, who had been captive for two days.
One of Samuel's sons, Robert (1791-1861), a great great grandfather, followed Daniel Boone into the vastness of Missouri, pitched his tent, thereby assisting Boone in moving civilization further West. Robert married Polly (Mary) Loughton. They had ten children: Samuel, William, Phineas, Joseph, Amanda, Isabelle, Rebecca, Elizabeth, James and John.
Joseph, son of Robert and great grandfather, was born in Boone County February 9,1827. On the death of his mother, at the age of six, he was bound to an Uncle Douglass. After ten years of bondage, over-work, poorly fed and clothed, at the age of sixteen, in 1843, he bound up his ragged apparel in a homemade tea towek and started on foot, barefooted, and alone for the home of his brother Samuel in Buchanan County, Missouri. Here he received kindness and twenty-five cents per day for work. He found board and lodging much of the time with Negro Slaves. During the war between the United States and Mexico in 1846, he was employed by the government as a teamster driving oxen, walking two trips to Mexico and back, hauling supplies to the army. He saved his earning and made payment on 80 acres of land in Buchanan County near Matney's Mill. He married Mary Ann Moutree in 1849. They established a pioneer home and resided there until 1855, when they joined in the immigration to Kansas, securing a quarter section where they resided until 1865. They sold 400 acres of land in Jefferson County, Missouri, and again, settled in Buchanan County near the little town of Gower. Joseph died in 1901, his wife in 1905. Six children were born to them: William Riley, James Samuel, Joseph Thomas, Daniel Henry, George Albert, Martha Walkup, and Rebecca Jane Walkup Wiley.
James Samuel, grandfather, was born May 17, 1858, in Jefferson County, Kansas, near the pioneer town of Winchester. In 1865, the family moved back to Gower, Missouri, where he attended school in a log school house and grew to manhood. He married Anne Gartin on March 24, 1878, and moved to a farm near Frazier. To this union were born four children: Ida, Roy, and twins, Earl and Pearl. James Samuel died August 31, 1933; his wife died December 22, 1922. Both are buried at Gower, Missouri.
Earl, son of James Samuel, Vincent's father, was born September 2, 1892, on the farm near Frazier and attended the Frazier School. He joined with his father in farming and raising livestock. He was married October 5, 1915 to Georgia Anne Thacker who was born May 11, 1895 near Oak, Missouri in Dekalb County. As a small girl, she moved to a farm near Frazier and attended NO. 5 School. They lived on a farm near Frazier for a few years before moving in with his father and mother. His mother, being in poor health, died soon afterwards. Earl and Anne lived in his boyhood home until their deaths. They celebrated their golden anniversary October 5, 1965, with an open house at their home. They were members of the Frazier Baptist Church. Earl was a member of the Frazier School Board for many years. Anne died September 3, 1969, and Earl died March 1, 1971.
