37040 Trooper A Chittick, 1st Battalion, Scottish Horse. Two Battalions of the Regiment were raised from Nov 1900, in South Africa, Great Britain and the Colonies. The 1st Battalion operated mainly in the Western Transvaal. Their first major action was on 29 May 1901 when they were part of a column under Brigadier General Dixon that was attacked at Vlakfontein Farm by 3-400 Boers who overwhelmed the 4 companies of the 7th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry, and a company of infantrymen. Two guns were captured and were turned against another British detachment. When the fight commenced the Scottish Horse were detached, but they rejoined Brigadier Dixon in time to assist a determined counter-attack by five companies of infantry that forced the burghers to retire. The British losses were heavy (69 killed, 110 wounded and 8 missing). The Boers suffered nine men killed. The next serious fight was when Delarey surprised the camp at Moedwill on 30 Sep 1901 (20 killed, 53 wounded). Trooper Chittick died of enteric fever (typhoid) at Elandsfontein on 6 Feb 1902. He is also commemorated on the Scottish Horse Boer War memorial on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/44642 and https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/138842/) and on the Scottish Horse Boer War memorial in Kensington, Johannesburg, South Africa (see: https://graves-at-eggsa.org/main.php?g2_itemId=874168).
