"SEATTLE, Wash./ VENICE, Fla./ MADISON, Wis.-- Patricia McIllece Carman died peacefully on Sept. 2, 2014, with her daughter, Meg, at her side. She was born Patricia Elizabeth McIllece on Oct. 5, 1923, to Ray Bishop McIllece and Blanche Ellen Cronin, and grew up in Lawrence, Neb. She attended Lawrence High School, and as a young woman she loved horseback riding and reading.

When it was time for Pat to leave for college in 1941, she signed up for all pre-med classes at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. In 1945, Pat was one of only four women out of 100 students admitted to the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha. After Medical School, Pat had internships at the University of Illinois Research and Education Hospital, where she delivered many babies to mothers in their own homes in South Chicago, and also at the New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston. She did her Pediatric Residency from 1950-1954 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

On April 29, 1950, she met David George Carman on a blind date and they were married on Nov. 25, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, Neb. They made their home in Madison. From 1954 until 1965, Pat practiced pediatrics and raised four children.

She was also the medical director for the Bureau of Handicapped Children. From 1965 until 1969, she completed a residency at the University of Wisconsin in Child Psychiatry. Pat was the first woman child psychiatrist in Madison and loved her work with children and families. She was in private practice from 1968 until 1995, and was also the first woman appointed to the Wisconsin State Board of Medical Examiners. She inspired many young women with her accomplishments and her belief that you could have both a successful career and family.

Pat was proudest of her children, enjoyed gourmet cooking, entertaining friends, and traveling with Dave in the Friendship Force. She loved her grandchildren, opera, playing bridge with her Gamma Phi sorority friends, cross-country skiing, reading, playing the piano, knitting, and dancing.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dave; brothers, Raymond and Bob; and her sister, Kathleen. She is survived by her children, Kathleen Mitrovich (Mike) of Seattle, Wash., D. Michael Carman of Albuquerque, N.M., Meg Carman (Rob Griffith) of Portland, Ore., and Jim Carman (Terri Wilson) of Madison, Wis.; and four grandchildren.

She and Dave lived in Madison, Wis., for most of their lives together, spending winters in Venice, Fla., for 20 years after retiring. They moved to Seattle, Wash., in 2002 after living full-time in Venice for three years. Dave and Pat were still dancing together on their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their families in attendance.

A memorial service will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Oct. 25, 2014, at the MADISON CLUB.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Evergreen Hospice, 12822 124th Lane, NE Kirkland, WA 98034; or Alzheimer's Disease Research, 1660 S. Columbia Way, Seattle, WA 98108."
