North Vernon - Samuel M. "Sam" Mays, 92, of Commiskey died at 10:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Jennings Health Care Center.


He retired from Arvin Industries in 1975, after 25 years. He helped farmers and was a coal miner in Beattyville, Ky. He was a World War II Army veteran. He enjoyed making knives, fishing, woodcarving and the outdoors. He was the oldest living member of Weston Baptist Church.


The funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Pickett Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Freeman officiating. Calling will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Burial will be at Vernon Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials may be made to Weston Baptist Church.


Mr. Mays was born April 20, 1912, in Lee County, Ky., to John Mays and Martha Reynolds. He married Laura Sipes in March 1934 in Lee County.


Survivors include sons, Jack Mays of Commiskey, Dudley Mays, Fred Mays and Larry Mays, all of North Vernon, and Ronnie Mays of Vernon; daughters, Barbara Derringer, Marlene Bohall and Donnie Spicer, all of Commiskey, and Delores Seals of Cincinnati; a sister, Eula Bailey of Berea, Ky.; 23 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, February 1996; sons, Lionel Mays and Bobby Mays; brothers, Dudley Mays and Carl Mays; and sisters, Bertie Porter, Eudell Littrell and Maude Longsworth.
