Four from Benton Killed in
Texarkana Car Accident.
At press time Wednesday night Mrs Arvist Curtis was reported still on the critical list at the Texarkana hospital as a result of the car accident.
Four members of a Benton family were fatally injured and one critically injured Tuesday when the car in which they were riding struck a highway culvert. The accident occurred on U.S. Highway 67 west of Texarkana.
Dead are S. H. Curtis, 73, his wife, Ella, 61, and their grandson Sammy Mason Curtis, 17, and granddaughter Mickey Curtis, 12.
Injured critically was Mrs Carolyn Curtis, 38, the mother of Sammy and Mickey Curtis. She is the wife of Arvist M. Curtis of Benton. The Curtis homes are next to each other on Ashly St. in Benton.
A police report said Mrs Arvist Curtis was driver of the car in which the family was returning from a Waco, Tex., trip. Mrs Curtis was attempting to pass several cars when she met a car being driven by Mrs. Eddie Hill of Texarkana.
Apparently to avoid a head-on collision, the drivers both swerved their cars to their left and the Curtis vehicle smashed into the highway culvert. Police said the highway surface was slick and a light rain was falling. Mr and Mrs Curtis were thrown from the car; the children were not. Mrs. S. H. Curtis died in a Texarkana hospital about three hours later. Mr. Curtis and his two grandchildren died almost instantly.
Mr. Curtis was a native of Paron but had lived in Benton for the last few years. He was a retired farmer. Both of the Curtis children attended Benton public schools.
Mr. Arvist Curtis operated a barber shop on the old Little Rock highway just south of the Capital. He had entered St. Vincent Infirmary at Little Rock the day of the accident for treatment and observation fo a stomach disorder.
Funeral plans were incomplete Wednesday night but will be announced by Ashby Funeral Home of Benton. [from the Benton Courier, August 18, 1960, page 1]
