John and his brother Edgar shipped out together with the CEF Battalions aboard the S. S. Olympic on Apr 16, 1916 bound for England.
John was KIA during an attack South West of Marquion and when acting as Company Runner, was sent with one other Company Runner to locate the Headquarters of the 10th Infantry Battalion at about 12:30 o'clock on the afternoon of September 3rd, 1918. This was the last time Private Rowe was seen and no further information regarding him can be obtained.
Though John died in France, his name is shown on the Purdy's Cemetery list, inscribed on the family stone, and on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial.
