Nearly 300 militiamen from Henry County, Virginia, under Col. Abraham Penn marched to join General Nathanael Greene's army in North Carolina at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, 15 Mar 1781. Only a list of the men involved written years later by Col. Penn survives to establish these men as soldiers of the Revolutionary War.
Virginia G. Pedigo and Lewis G. Pedigo, A History of Henry County, Virginia, 1933, page 13, at GoogleBooks, listed as Joseph Piper.

Margaret Blackwelder Phifer was the youngest surviving sibling. What did that mean as far as family was concerned? That meant it was up to her to care for her agining and ailing widowed father. Her step mother had died at sea when the family was sailing to the colonies in 1738. Her father never remarried. So it was her family duty to care for her father.
This is evidenced by the births of her first children in Lunenburg County, VA - where her father lived and where she and Martin lived until after her father's death. It was not for certain as to when Martin and Margaret migrated, but their last child, Mary Anna, was born on 02 Feb 1758 in Cabarrus County. Martin Jr may have been born in Lunenburg County on 25 Mar 1756, but some assume it was in Cabarrus County.
Since we could not obtain what we needed from the Phifer research in Cabarrus County, we must go back to Lunenburg County to get our indicator.
Margaret's father, Johannes "John" Schwarzwaelder / Blackwelder, died on 07 Sep 1756, six months after the birth of Martin Phifer, Jr.
In his last will and testament, John bequeathed substancial amounts of land and money to his surviving children and grandchildren. Among those mentioned in his will were the Phifer grandchildren: John, Caleb, Joseph and baby Martin who were given some acreage and money to be split evenly between them.
