After the death of his dad in 1832, the family moved to Tallapoosa County with the family of his uncle William Sentell around 1835.
Samuel married Martha Jane Cruise in Talladega County July 19, 1853, served during the war as a Private in Company D of the 51st Alabama. The family is found in the 1880 census living at Chandler Springs in Talladega County.
Samuel filed for his Civil War pension in May of 1899 and is listed as living at Avondale in Jefferson County, Alabama. His residence in Jefferson County has not been located, but we know that daughter Martha "Mattie" Sentell Conn was living in Jefferson County at this time frame.
Samuel shows up in the newspaper in 1906 at a meeting of the confederate veterans in Anniston where he received a medal. He is listed as passing away at Anniston in 1909. No identification of burial has been located, so this memorial is created to document his life and history. It is believed he and wife Martha are here at Edgemont, near others in the family in possible unmarked graves.
Served four years in the Confederate Army. Entered the service of the Confederate Army as a Private in March 1862 at Lineville, Alabama in Company C of the 51st Alabama and continued in the service until the surrender"; m Martha Jane Carroll ( also found as Crouse or Crews)
He also known as "old man Jack Center" by many of his neighbors in Talladega and Lineville, Alabama.
