Dr. Arnold Grady Shirey, 89, a longtime prominent citizen of Hayti, died Dec. 28, 1992, at Pemiscot Nursing Home. Born Sept. 26, 1903 at Albertville, Ala., he was the son of Thomas Jefferson and Lucinda Bishop Baxley.
After graduating from the University of Tennessee at Memphis, with a Doctor of Medicine Degree, he moved to Hayti and established his practice in 1934. He was a general practitioner with a passion for obstetrics. The office medical records show an estimate of 7,000 births during his career.
Dr. Shirey was a member of the Hayti Lions Club for over 50 years and a past member of the Hayti School Board, having served for 12 years. From August 1951, until June, 1977, he was an active staff member of Pemiscot Memorial Hospital and an honorary member form June, 1977, until his death. He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Margaret Louise Shirey of Hayti; a son, William ‘Bill' Shirey of Cullman, Ala., three daughters, Wanda Dean Shirey of Jackson, Tenn., Faye Shirey Smith of Memphis and Kay Shirey Inman of Little Rock; a stepdaughter, Joyce Emerson King of Blytheville; a brother, Floyd Shirey of Hayti; two sisters, Treasy Shirey of Columbia, Miss., and Flora Shirey Barnes of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
Services were Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist church, the Rev. Ralph Bruce, Ph. D. officiating, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, john w. German Fuenral Home of Hayti in charge.
Pallbearers were Tommy Potts, Duane Michie, Wallace Luye, Jerry Sandage and Mike and Joe Shirey.
