Mr. Axtell was born in Syracuse and had lived in the Sterling area most of his life.
He retired as Master Sergeant in the US Air Force, where he had served as an officer of Special Investigations agent. He was a Korean War veteran and a Vietnam War veteran, where he received the Bronze Star medal.
Mr. Axtell was personnel manager at Alcan Rolled Products Co. from 1968-77, and was security chief for Stone & Webster Construction from 1977-86 in Oswego. Mr. Axtell owned and operated A.I.A. Investigations.
He was a member of the Martville United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 268 in Oswego, the Elks Lodge No. 271 in Oswego, and the Hannibal Lodge No. 550, F&AM.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Axtell; a daughter, Bonnie Lewis of Hannibal; four sons, Keith of Houston, TX, David of Martville, George of Hannibal and Samuel of Sterling; his mother, Flossie Axtell of Oswego; two sisters, Betty Cook of Avon and Barbara Fowler of Oswego; two brothers, Stanley of Sterling and Dale of Centreville, MD; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Mon from the Foster Funeral Home. The Rev. Walter Griffis will officiate. Calling hours will be 2-4 and 7-9 pm Sun at the funeral home, 910 Fay St., Fulton. Masonic services will be at 7 pm Sun.
Contributions may be made to the Martville United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
