Joan Cawood Nivens passed away peacefully in Austin, Texas, on May 6, 2015 at the age of 85. She moved to Austin in the summer of 2013 to be near her daughter and family but always considered her home to be Midland, Texas, where she lived for over 30 years. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Rolf Eugene "Gene" Nivens, her brother Chester Thomas Cawood, and her sister Lawrene Moore. Joan is survived and lovingly remembered by her sister, Virginia Edwards of Slaton, TX; her daughter, Gena Nivens Keller, son-in-law Harrison Keller and grandchildren, William, Elizabeth, Emily and Mary Katherine of Austin, TX. She was known as "Jo Jo" to her four grandchildren, who were blessed to have her involved in their lives. Joan Nivens was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1929. Her family moved from Kansas to Roswell, New Mexico, and after completing high school Joan had a successful career as a draftsman with Humble Oil. She took college classes throughout her career and took great pleasure in continuing her education even after having a child and leaving her career in oil and gas. Joan was a wonderful example of serving Christ through her church, volunteering in many capacities from teaching Sunday School to preparing and serving meals to the church men's group. She also served as a Meals on Wheels volunteer and enjoyed helping others in the community. One of her most treasured memories was her weekly coffee with close friends. A graveside service will take place at the Magnolia Cemetery on Hwy. 294 near Palestine, Texas on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 2:00 p.m.
