Daniel Camarena, 93, of El Centro passed away Tuesday, January 12. Daniel was born to Heraclio Camarena and Maria Camarena. At the age of 19, he traveled to Mexicali, BC, with his father. His father returned to Tepic, Nayarit, and he remained in Mexicali for many years where he also married. Even though he had limited education, he was a self-taught carpenter. Daniel was known for his detailed work as a carpenter and was greatly sought for this skill. He built numerous houses in Mexicali, Calexico, El Centro, and a cabin in Pine Top, AZ. In December, 1956, he immigrated with his family to the United States and settled in Calexico, CA. Later, he moved to Los Angeles and lived there for almost 23 years. In 1998, he came to live with his daughter, Bertha Tamayo, in El Centro, CA, until his death. Living in a rural area was a big change for him since he was used to the fast life in Los Angeles. Eventually, he embraced the quietness and peacefulness found in country living. He loved his chickens as well as his family pet dogs. Daniel had a natural witty personality, even up to his last moments. He was also a very caring and giving person who never hesitated to help the needy. He loved to read, listen to the radio, and fish. He was most happy when he was with family and friends and was always up-to-date with current events. Daniel loved all of his children in his own special way and with unconditional love. Dad, even though you are gone from this world, your smile, laughter and sense of humor will always remain in our hearts. We love you, dad. Visitation for Daniel will be held Wednesday, January 20 at 6 p.m. at Hems Brothers Mortuary in Calexico. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Mass will commence at 12 p.m. on Thursday, January 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Calexico with Father Godinez officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. He was preceded in death by his parents, Heraclio and Maria Camarena; sisters, Maria de Refugio Escalante, Maria Esther Camarena, and Felipa Camarena; sons, Eduardo, Ernesto, and Enrique Camarena. Daniel had 11 children and is survived by daughters: Bertha Tamayo (Gilbert), El Centro; Norma Urias (Lazaro), Sacramento; Myrna Camarena, La Mesa; Sandra Camarena, Yuma, AZ; Lourdes Camarena, Santee; Diana Lucero (Ernesto), Chula Vista; and Rosalia Camarena (Hugo), Los Angeles; and son, Daniel Camarena (DeeAnn), National City; sister, Guadalupe Camarena; and brother, Raymundo Camarena, Tepic, Nayarit. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 19 great- grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.
