Aksel was aboard the DS Vesteraalen, a Norwegian combined passenger and cargo liner. On October 17, 1941, the ship was on her way north from Tromsø when it was torpedoed by a Russian submarine. The ship broke in half and sunk in 30 seconds. Seven passengers managed to survive, but 53 people drowned in the disaster.

Aksel was killed in the sinking.

"HERNESS, AKSEL, captain, Trondheim. Born 27 August 1889 in Bodin, s. of Sølfest Olsen Herness, b. 1844, d. 1931 in Bodin, and Helene b. Trondsen, b. 1852 in Bodin, d. 1942 s. st. Married 1917 in Trondheim to Edvarda Olsen, born 1893 in Sandstad. Mate and master's examination. Went to sea when he was 16. Led d/s Vesteraalen, and died when the ship sank after an explosion off Nuvsvåg, Finnmark, 17 October 1941." (From "Our Fallen")
