6363 Private A Kavanagh, 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Gascon on 14 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 7 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Bedfordshire, 2nd Worcestershire, and 2nd Wiltshire, they formed the 12th Brigade under Major General Clements. On arrival they were sent to the Colesberg District. By the end of Feb 1900 they were able to cross the Orange River and join the main army advance to Bloemfontein. Private Kavanagh died of disease on 3 Jun 1900. He is also commemorated on the Royal Irish Regiment Boer War memorial in Kickham Barracks, Waterford Road, Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=265).

He is not listed on the cemetery memorial under the Royal Irish Regiment. Two soldier called Kavanagh in the Royal Irish Regiment died in Bloemfontein in May/Jun 1900. Only one is listed.
