Vernon Burgess was born December 8, 1936, in Valdasta, Texas and passed away September 20, 2022, at his home in Delba, Texas. Between those two dates, Vernon lived a life that made a big impact on those who had the privilege of knowing him. He was married June 2, 1958, to Kay Dian Westmoreland.

He was full of optimism and joy. He had a witty and playful mind. He loved his family and friends deeply. He was a good friend to many, and people just loved to be around him. Vernon was able to face setbacks and difficulties with an amazingly upbeat attitude. He made the doctors and nurses that were tending to him laugh. What would throw others into despondency and depression, he dealt with in cheerfulness and humor. He was fiercely independent, yet very thankful when others helped him out.

Vernon had a passion for the Bible and taught it at Nobility Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. He loved bluegrass and gospel music. In recent years, he frequented the Wylie Opry on Friday night for Gospel night and Saturday night for country music night. He was a singer and those around him in church could hear him belting out the bass line.

He had an undying faith in God and salvation through Jesus. In addition to his faith, his greatest devotion was to his family, his wife, son, daughters-in-law, grandkids, sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, and cousins. They all loved Vernon. He stood out. He was the one who told the stories and jokes, the one always ready for a big hug.

He was genuine and consistent and made everywhere he went a better place and made those that he was with feel better about the world and themselves. He loved people and they could tell. His death leaves a void that cannot be filled, except for gratitude that he was in our lives.

Vernon is survived by his son, Bobby Burgess and daughter-in-law Jennifer Spradling Burgess of Leonard, Texas; two sisters, Gail Bowers of Blue Ridge, Texas and Dora Lou Luster and her husband Robert; 8 grandkids: Joshua Burgess of Leonard, Texas, Jeremy Burgess of Farmers Branch, Texas, Jonathan Burgess and his wife Cassie of College Station, Jacoby Burgess of Farmers Branch, Texas, Julia Butler of Leonard, Texas, Morgan Butler of Greenville, Texas, Josiah Butler of Florida, Madelyn Butler of College Station, Texas; bunches of cousins, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Ruamie Tilton and husband Gary of Pinnacle, North Carolina and Joan King and husband Stan of Pilot Mountain North Carolina. He is preceded in death by his wife Kay Burgess, his dear friend Marie Hammers, his daughter-in-law, Jan Burgess, his parents, Robert and Edwina Burgess, brothers Bob Burgess, Byron Burgess, his sisters Mary Lynn Cook and Loretta Hopper, nephew, Skippey Alley and his niece, Abby Tilton.

His funeral will be held Saturday, September 24 at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Blue Ridge, Texas. A meal for the family will precede the funeral at 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall. A visitation time for all friends and family will be held Friday night from 6-8 p.m. at Hurst's Fielder-Baker Funeral Home in Farmersville, Texas.
