Melvin L. Murphy, 89, Greensburg, died at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2005 in Decatur County Hospital in Greensburg.
Born, November 26, 1915 in Franklin Co., Indiana, he was the son of Omer and Nora (Hankins) Murphy.
He had worked at South Park Cemetery from 1937-1943, then joined the Army and and was captured by the Germans on Dec. 17, 1943 during the Battle of the Bulge. He was liberated by the Russians in May of 1944. When he returned from the war, he worked for Kesslers Bakery and Wonder Bread until his retirement in 1977. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He was married to Lillian Marie Bruner on May 1, 1937 and she survives.
He is survived by his wife: Lillian Marie Murphy, Greensburg; 2 sons, Michael M. Murphy, Avon, Larry (Rhonda) Murphy, Greensburg; 1 sister, Nellie Hersley, Greensburg; 3 grandchildren, Christie, Scott & Laramy Murphy; 2 Great Grandchildren, Garner & Garrett Murphy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 son, Danny Omer Murphy, 3 brothers, Clyde, Wilbur & Cecil Murphy; 2 sisters, Mildred Busch and Daisy Riley.
Visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 at the Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg.
Internment will be held in the South Park Cemetery. The VFW will hold military graveside services.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
