John was a wonderful father and husband. Along with being a World War II veteran, he was a gifted carpenter who, in addition to building his family's house in Oxford, Georgia, worked on building the Jimmy Carter Library, Grady Hospital, Egleston Hospital, and many other buildings and projects throughout the Atlanta and Chicago areas. He retired from the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War and the American Legion.

He, along with Joanne, were also members of Wilhite Baptist Church. Although born in South Dakota, he lived throughout the country. He met Joanne in Chicago, Illinois and they were married within three weeks. He moved his family to Oxford, Georgia in the late 1970s, where he lived until 2013.

He and Joanne moved to Cookeville, Tennessee to be closer to their children. Shortly thereafter, his only grandson Benjamin was born, who was the apple of his eye. He loved his family with all of his heart and to which he devoted his life. He was a proud man with a kind and loving heart.
