Film director. Considered one of the best directors in East Germany, Carow started his career with Sheriff Teddy (1957), and after directed un-noteworthy films, directed The Legend of Paul and Paula (1973), to which he also wrote the screenplay. Often considered by some to be the best film from East Germany, it almost wasn't released because of its political overtones, with Erich Honecker having to personally approve of the film in order for it to be released. In 1986, he directed So Many Dreams, which gained him recognition outside of the Eastern bloc when it was selected by East Germany to be shown as their selection at the 37th International Berlin Film Festival in West Germany. In 1989, he directed Coming Out, the first and only East German film to deal with the topic of homosexuality. This film would win him the Silver Bear award at the 40th International Berlin Film Festival. After reunification, he made four un-noteworthy films before dying in 1997 at the age of 67.
