Adelia DeMille Squire

Adelia was born in 1832 in Jackson Co., Missouri to Freeborn DeMille and Anna Knight DeMille. As a young man, Joseph Smith, worked for Anna's parents and proved he could be trusted and was a good worker. Freeborn and Anna and many relatives were at the first meeting when the church was organized at the Peter Whitmer home.

They believed and followed the Prophet Joseph Smith and were persecuted for it. In December 1833, when Adelia was only 1 year old, they were driven from their home by a mob to Clay County. In 1839, when Adelia was about 7, they were driven to Quincy, IL, and to other places. In 1842, they went to Nauvoo where they stayed until 22 April, 1846. Adelia was 14 when they were driven out of Nauvoo.

On the 26th of May, they arrived at Mt. Pisgah where they resided until 1850. Then they started for the Great Salt Lake Valley and arrived in Manti, Sanpete Co, UT on November 5, 1850. Adelia was just 18 and walked all the way across the Plains and drove the oxen team.

Adelia was married to John Prichard Squire, Sr. on December 31, 1851 in the Endowment House by Bishop John Lowery. She received her endowments on 22 Sept. 1855.

After her marriage, she used to rise early and get breakfast over, then help her husband carry in the benches, and prepare their little one-roomed house for a school-room for him. He was the school teacher. After school, they would carry out the benches and carry in the beds, etc. Besides her own children, she raised 2 grandchildren; training them all up in a very fine efficient manner.

Adelia and John had 8 children: Orpha Elizabeth Squire, Harriet Amelia Squire, John Prichard Squire, Aaron DeMille Squire, Anna Maria Squire, Adelia Lovina Squire, Eliza Roxey Squire, and Oliver Elias Squire.

She was skilled in needle-work, cooking, and housekeeping. She was also a constant and efficient church worker, laboring long in the Relief Society and also in Temple work.

For 45 years after her husband's death, she carried on well and faithfully. Her baby was only 5 years old when her husband died and she was left with all responsibility.

Adelia DeMille was a wonderful example of being faithful, even at a young age. She knew the prophet Joseph Smith and lived in the early days of the Church. She was such a valiant daughter of God and mother in Zion.
