Vera Bernice "Bernie" Cloninger, 74, of Meredosia, IL, passed away peacefully in her sleep and went to be with the Lord and reunited with her husband, Charles, on Sunday morning, September 11, 2022.

She was born April 7, 1948, in Meredosia, the daughter of the Rev. Leonard, Sr. and F. Rosetta Easley Vanhyning. She married Charles E. Cloninger on Dec. 13, 1975, in Meredosia, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 2016.

She is survived by one daughter and two sons, Natalie (Bryan) Eure and Joseph Cloninger, all of Alta Vista, VA and John Cloninger (fiancé, Paytan Stech) of Mt. Sterling; five grandchildren, Macy, Lexi, Riley, Bailey and Kieryn; and two brothers and one sister, Kenneth VanHyning of Marion, VA, John (Robert Lengnel) VanHyning and Jan VanHyning (Alvin) Grant, all of Avon Park, FL. Mrs. Cloninger was a caregiver for her brothers and sisters and continued taking care of anyone she could throughout her lifetime. She attended beauty school in Jacksonville and had worked at Kordite (later to become Reynolds Consumer Products) and Bound to Stay Bound Books. She was a Foster Parent for DCFS for over 30 years while living in Florida. Vera was an active member of Gospel Tabernacle Church in Meredosia where she played piano for services. Vera and Charles donated and distributed food throughout the communities wherever they lived. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years. Vera loved playing Yahtzee and going to the boat dock to watch the barges go by ("bee-bopping"). She was a strong-independent woman, very loving and kind, and changed the lives of many people for the better.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Meredosia, with burial at Oakland Cemetery.
