THOMAS HOUSTON SHELTON
October 26, 1936 - August 18, 2022

Thomas Houston Shelton, 85 of Rushville passed away on August 18, 2022 in Rushville. He was born on October 26, 1936 in Dimple, KY to the late Burrel and Noka Shelton.

Tom was a 1954 Jeffersonville High School graduate. He later attended Franklin College where he played football and baseball. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He received his Bachelors Degree from Franklin College in 1958 and his Masters Degree from Ball State University in 1962. He married Mary Beth (Friend), his wife of 57 years on November 27, 1958 and she preceded him in death on May 9, 2016.

Tom was an avid sports fan and cherished spending time with his family and friends. Tom and his family enjoyed 47 summers on Paradise Lake in Carp Lake, MI where they own a cottage. He taught science at the Rushville Junior High School for 36 years. He coached football, basketball and baseball and was called "Coach" by many of his former students. After coaching, Tom was an IHSAA Official for football and basketball and later went on to be an announcer for the Rushville Lions football and basketball games on WRCR radio.

He was a long time member of Main Street Christian Church in Rushville where he served in many ways. In recent years Tom became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Tom was active in the community as a member of the Optimist Club and the Rushville Elks Lodge. In 1983 he was named a Kentucky Colonel, by the Governor of Kentucky for his outstanding contributions to his community and state.

Tom is survived by his son Ted (Mescal) Shelton of Rushville, IN and son Tim (Colleen) Shelton of Midland, MI. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Katie Beth, Sam, Olivia and husband Jay, Lucas and wife Kenedy, and his great granddaughter Hadley Beth. Tom is also survived by his sisters Patty Pope of New Braunfels, TX and Betty Grogan of Honolulu, Hi.

Tom is preceded in death by his parents Burrel Houston Shelton and Noka (Ragland) Shelton, wife Mary Beth (Friend) Shelton and his sister Sue Thornley.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10 2022 at 2:00 PM at Moster Mortuary with Pastor John Wall presiding. Friends and family are welcome to visit from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. memorial contributions can be made to the Rushville Elks #1307 Scholarship Fund or the Rush County Community Foundation.
