"GLADYS L. PENLAND DEAD at 81
BERKELEY-Mrs. Gladys Leggett Penland, 81, prominent in Bay Area business, club and political activities for nearly 50 years, died Wednesday of a heart attack.
Mrs. Penland was attending a meeting of the College Women's Club of Berkeley, Wednesday, stood to make a motion, and collapsed suddenly and died. She was a past president of the organization.
She entered the business world in 1920, shortly after the death of her first husband, Howard M. Leggett, when she took over his insurance business. She ran the office of Leggett Insurance, Inc., until 1947, when a son, Howard Jr., took over.
She remained active in the firm, as a chairman of the board until 1967, and as a director until her death.
An energetic clubwoman, she was oner of five founders of the International Soroptimists, in 1921, and a charter member and past president of the Soroptimist Club of Oakland.
She was also a member of the 20th Century Club of Berkeley, the daughters of the American Revolution, Lafayette Chapter; and st. Mark's Episcopal Church of Berkeley.
She married Berkeley physician Hugh B. Penland in 1925.
Mrs. Penland's political interests spanned 30 years, and led to her election as president of the California Republican Women's Club and as vice president of the National Federation of Republican Women.
A native of Los Angeles, she moved to the Easy in 1905 to attend the University of California.
In 1950 she bought the old Alpha Pi sorority house, at 2312 Durant Ave., converted it to a home, and lived in it thereafter. Dr. Penland died in 1952.
She is survived by her son, Howard, of Alamo; a brother Leighton Armstrong, of Sacramento; and three grandchildren, Allen T. Leggett and Howard III, of Oakland, and Cameron Leggett, of Alamo. She also leaves four great-grandchildren.
Service will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Truman's Chapel, 2935 Telegraph Ave."
