Samuel Davis, old resident of Beatrice, passed away Tuesday night at his home at 598 Perry street, after a lingering illness. He was one of the oldest employes of the Dempster company of this city and had a wide acquaintance here and elsewhere in the county. Mr. Davis was one of the pioneers of Gage county, coming here shortly after the civil war and settling on a farm west of the city. Here he engaged in farming and for several years ran a threshing machine, doing the major part of the threshing in that community, where his services were always appreciated by his friends and neighbors. There were a number of years when, on account of crops not being the best and prices being low, farming lost its charm for quite a number. Among those whom it affected was our valued friend and neighbor, Samuel Davis. Moving to Beatrice in 1882, on September 22, this being before the Dempster Mill Mfg., Co. was incorporated.
Mr. Davis was the second employee engaged by Mr. Dempster and proved true and loyal to his employer, remaining with him until Jan. 6, 1911, when he was forced to give up his work on account of rheumatism, which trouble remained with him until his death, which occurred May 25, 1926, at 11:50 p.m. o'clock.
While Mr. Davis has been unable to perform his work for several years, yet he has always been considered a member of the Dempster organization and his frequent visits to the factory during three years were pleasant occasions for his many friends who are still active. In his death, the Dempster company has lost a just and faithful member of their organization, the veterans of the civil war, another member from their ranks, and the community an upright and honorable citizen, whose interests were always aligned with right and justice. To such a life the community owes much and it is but fitting that all show their appreciation.
Mr. Davis was born August 15, 1841, at Gardner Hollow, N.Y., and was 84 years, 9 months and 10 days of age. He served in the Civil War as a member of Company B. Eighth Illinois Cavalry, serving the entire four years.
On October 6, 1868, he was married to Elizabeth D. Riddle, nine children being born to this union. One died in childhood and the rest are living. They are Theodore Davis of Beatrice; David S. Davis of Keokuk, Ia.; Alonzo Davis of Fairbury, Nebr.; Guy E. of Quincy, Ill.; H.O. of Atchinson, Kans.; John H. of Fairbury; Earl T. of Keokuk, Ia.; and Mrs. Ethel Mills of Beatrice. Mrs. Davis passed away in 1899. He also is survived by eighteen grand children and three great grand children.
Funeral services for Mr. Davis will be held at 2:30 o'clock on Friday afternoon from the home. The Reverend Young, pastor of the United Brethern church, will officiate, assisted by the Reverend Ross McCown, pastor of the First Presbyterian church.
