Funeral of Dr. Ashinhurst Held Friday Afternoon
The funeral services of Dr. T.E. Ashinhurst, the announcement of whose death at his home in Waurika Thursday afternoon of last week, was made in last week's issue of the News-Democrat was held from the Baptist Church Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Andrew Potter of Enid a former pastor of the church here. The preacher paid a beautiful tribute to the life and character of the deceased, having known him intimately as a member of his church.
The funeral service was one of the largest attended ever held in Waurika and the floral offerings from friends and neighbors and business associates were many and beautiful. The business houses of town were closed during the hour of the funeral out of respect to the memory of the deceased.
The pall bearers were Dr. C.M. Maupin, Dr. L.L. Wade, Dr. W.M. Browning, Dr. D.C. Collins, Dr. J.L. Derr, and Gail S. Durham, the first five all being members of the medical fraternity and the last with whom Dr. Ashinhurst had been most closely associated for a number of years.
The burial services were conducted by the Masonic Lodge, of which order Dr. Ashinhurst was a member. These services were in charge of former Grand Master Joe Morris of Snyder and they were beautiful and impressive. A number of Mason were in attendance at the service from Ryan, Hastings, and Terral.
The passing of Dr. Ashinhurst removes from our midst one of the best loved and highly esteemed of our citizens. Few men pass on with more friends and fewer enemies, in fact so far as we are able to know, he had no enemies. He had stamped his personality on the community in a way that makes his going keenly felt. He had for a number of years been a member of the city Board of Education and during that time had worked constantly and unselfishly for the upbuilding of the schools.
As a member of the medical fraternity he ranked high. Always true to the highest ethics of his noble profession, not one of its members could be more sincerely mourned than he.
