Son of Thomas L. Cashion and Mary Frances Cowsert.

Brother of Richard A., Jesse Mason, A. Blanche, Allie Belle, and Thomas Bartley. James Leon "Lon" was the first-born.

He married Permilia Catherine "Katie" Blake in Fannin Co. on Jan. 14, 1891. They had five children - Bernard Leon Cashion, Ross Blake Cashion, Lois Lorelle Cashion (m. James Lafayette Cox), Edwin Raymond Cashion, and James Alton Cashion.

He was a cotton farmer on the family farm located about four miles south of Bonham in the Moore's Chapel community. Part of the original farm is now part of Bonham State Park.

The 1870 and 1900 censuses for Fannin Co., Texas and his death certificate indicate he was born in 1866, instead of 1869 on his headstone.
