Shirley Ward

Church Hill - Shirley Jean Manis Ward, 51, ascended into the arms of Jesus on Sunday night (May 8, 2005) at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville following an extended illness.

She was born in Hawkins County on Oct. 12, 1953, to the late Madison Henry Manis and Bobbie Lou Spitzer Manis, where she remained a lifelong resident of Church Hill. Shirley was an avid quilter and gardener who accepted Christ at an early age and kept him at the center of her life until he called her home.

She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Surgoinsville.

Surviving are her loving husband of 34 years, Dempsey Ward, Church Hill; two daughters, Jennifer Ward Hawks and her husband, Christopher, Kingsport, Sharon Ward Helton and her husband Terry, Church Hill; one son, Jason Ward and his girlfriend, Amy Smith, Church Hill; three very special grandsons, Joseph Helton, Michael Keeton and McKenzie Keeton; her brothers, Wayne Manis, Larry Manis and his wife, Louise, and Randy Manis; her sisters, Karen Dalton and her husband, Michael, Debbie Housewright and her husband, Gary, Janet Matthews and her husband, Jerry; along with several nieces and nephews who were all dear to her heart; and two special friends, Caroline Short and Judy Mallory.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Carter Trent Funeral Homes of Church Hill and friends may also call anytime at the residence of the daughter, Jennifer Hawks, 301 Imperial Circle, Kingsport.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Teddy Webb and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Longs Bend Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chris Hawks, Terry Helton, Jerry Ward, Travis Manis, Allen Mallory, Justin Housewright and Shane Manis.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Longs Bend Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Kenneth Wilder, 1807 Longs Bend Pike, Surgoinsville, Tenn. 37873.
