The subject of this review is one of the large number of sons of the fair Emerald Isle who have played a worthy part in the development of Marshall county and, having led a Consistent and honest life, has been not only an influence in the material life of the community but a worthy exponent of right living and clean politics, so that he is entitled to representation in the history of his adopted country, which, while duly reverencing the memory of the old sod, he has held ever dear.
Mr. Andrews was born in Ireland, January 31, 1837, and is the son of John and Martha (Mitchell) Andrews, both natives of that country, whose parents, on both sides, came from Scotland, where they were born. The ancestors of the subject founded the city of St. Andrews, Scotland. The parents of the subject grew up in Ireland, were educated and married there, and there they spent their early lives, emigrating to America in 1846 and settling in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, later coming to Whiteside county, Illinois, in the early history of that locality and there began farming and there they spent the balance of their lives, the father dying in 1891 and the mother later. Their family consisted of nine children, five of whom are living in 1911. Politically, the father was a Whig, later a Republican. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.
Mitchell E. Andrews was educated in Ireland, and when a young man he accompanied his parents to Illinois, remaining there until 1869, when he came to Marshall county, Iowa, locating in Washington township on a farm of one hundred and sixty acres, to which he added, as he prospered by good management and hard work, until he had four hundred and forty acres of as valuable land as the county affords, which he tilled in a manner that stamped him as one of our best agriculturists. For thirty years he was a breeder of short-horn cattle and his sons have continued the same business to the present time.
Mr. Andrews moved to Marshalltown in 1902 where he has since resided. He is the owner of three hundred and twenty acres in Potter county, South Dakota. He now owns a residence at No. 8 South Ninth street, Marshalltown, in addition to his other property. He is a member of the Masonic order and is a Knight Templar. Politically, he is a Republican.
In 1861 Mr. Andrews was united in marriage with Eliza J. Law, a native of Illinois, her parents being early settlers of that state, later moving to Iowa, where the father lived until his death; Mrs. Law is still living in Adair county, this state.
